Superintendent Hopeful For New Year

All eight Salem schools got back to it today.

Salem's public school students got back to school Wednesday from one side of town to the other, ending a long, hot summer with a return to books, pencils and lockers.

Earlier this week, SAU 57 Superintendent Michael Delahanty said he was "optimistic" about the start of the 2012-2013 school year, which includes administrators, principals and teachers in new positions throughout the district.

This includes new SAU 57 Superintendent Maura Palmer, new Principal Tracy Collyer and new Principal George Murray.

"It takes a lot of work to pull off a successful opening," Delahanty said.

Over the course of the break, Delahanty said making that sure transportation is right, that students get to the right classrooms on their first day and that lunches and snacks are served at the right time are part of that preparation.

"Those are the kinds of things that are worked on all summer long to make sure we have a smooth an opening as possible," he said.

Delahanty said Salem High athletes have been participating in their fall preparations since Aug. 13 with football starting back on Aug. 8. In addition, he said the high school's nationally-renowned band has also been hard at work during that time.

"We want to make sure all of the students leave their first day with a smile on their face," Delahanty said.
