The Ice Storm of '08: Five Years Later

The storm hit on Dec. 11 and 12 of that year.

This week marks five years since the devastating ice storm of 2008, which knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of New Hampshire customers and left some people in the dark for as long as two weeks.

According to the Associated Press, more than 450 schools were closed, four people died, and more than 100 were injured as a result of the storm. It was the worst storm in the history of the state in terms of power outages, ahead of the 2010 wind storm, the Snowtober storm of 2011 and Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

Part of the problem was that no one expected a storm of that magnitude. Some of the electric utilities were caught off guard, and wound up making changes to the way they approach storms to prevent similar outages in the future.

If you're having trouble remembering the extent of the devastation, watch the YouTube videos of the aftermath of the storm above, shot by New Hampshire residents.
