Many appliances old and new have electronic control boards. Sometimes these control boards can go on the fritz and lock out or display and error code. Many times this can be caused by power flashes or outages. And sometimes for no apparent reason they just stop working. Before calling a service company reset the power to the appliance, simply turn the corresponding breaker off or unplug the unit for five minutes and then turn it back on.
Now this won't work for every appliance but it's always the first step you should take before paying someone else to this for you.
