The Town of Salem bids a fond farewell to a distinguished leader, Fire Chief Lawrence D. Best, as he announces his retirement, effective Aug. 31, 2023. Chief Best's retirement marks the conclusion of a remarkable journey spanning over three decades of exemplary service, during which he has consistently demonstrated unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of the Salem community.

Chief Best's illustrious career began with humble roots as a Volunteer Firefighter in Meriden, NH, in 1987. His passion for firefighting and emergency response grew steadily, leading him to become a vital asset in the Laconia and Durham Fire Departments as well. In 2003, Chief Best joined the Salem Fire Department and rapidly ascended through the ranks, ultimately attaining the role of Chief of Department in August 2018. His leadership, foresight, and dedication have been instrumental in shaping the department's operational excellence and commitment to public safety.

Throughout his tenure, Chief Best has exemplified the values of continuous learning and professional growth. His academic achievements include a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fire and Emergency Management from Rivier College and an Associate Degree in Applied Science in Fire Science from New Hampshire Technical College. Chief Best's deep commitment to enhancing his knowledge and skills is evident in his extensive list of certifications and training, ranging from incident command systems to hazardous materials response and advanced medical care.

Chief Best's contributions extend beyond the confines of the firehouse. He has been a champion of community engagement and has played an active role in various organizations, including the Greater Salem NH Rotary Club, where he has served as Vice President and coordinated the Holiday Basket initiative. Additionally, Chief Best has held leadership position in the New Hampshire Association of Fire Chiefs as well as being a member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs., showcasing his dedication to advancing the fire service profession. Recognized for his exceptional contributions, Chief Best has received the Greater Salem NH Rotary Club & District 7930 Paul Harris Fellow Award and earned distinctions such as the NH Fire Service Committee of Merit Class 2 Medal of Valor Service Award and the Meritorious Unit Citation Service Award. These honors reflect not only Chief Best's courage and dedication but also his ability to inspire and lead his team.
