The Week Ahead: Oktoberfest, Speed Dating, Garden Talks, and More

Here’s a roundup of fun things to do in and around New Hampshire’s Patch communities. Click on the links for more information:

Weather

Beyond Monday night and Tuesday morning, it’s looking like a pretty good week: Forecasters are calling for partly sunny skies and highs in the mid-70s in the central and southern part of the state on Monday; expect lower temps on the Seacoast. Showers start to roll in around 8 p.m.-ish with temps dropping down to the 50s. The rain is expected to continue into Tuesday morning, with highs in the mid-50s. On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday expect sun and highs in the low-to-mid-60s, with temps in the mid-40s; low 50s during the evening.

• The Craftworkers’ Guild Harvest Craft Shop 2014 seasonal store at The Oliver Kendall House, 5 Meetinghouse Road in Bedford is opened from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., offering a wide variety of quality crafts.
• The Barley House, 132 N. Main St. in Concord, hosts its annual Oktoberfest event starting at 11 a.m. Download the menu in PDF here.

Monday

• Fore! ... the students, actually: Rivier University’s Golf Classic Fundraiser starts at 10:30 a.m. in Nashua. Registration is required and it’s $250 per player.
• The Penacook Village Farmers’ Market will be held from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the Rolfe Homestead at 11 Penacook St. in Penacook. 
• “Lamb of God: As the Palaces Burn,” the documentary film about the band, will be shown at the Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12-$15.
• Are you single and between the ages of 48 and 65? Dynamic Speed Dating at Margarita’s in Salem might fun for you at 7 p.m.

Tuesday

• U.S. Senate candidate Jeanne Shaheen will be interviewed from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Rudman Center at UNH School of Law in Concord as part of a candidate conversation series that will also air live on NHPR.
• Christine Halvorson of the Social Media School of New Hampshire and Halvorson New Media hosts a Launch Your Business into Social Media at the Congregational Church of Amherst on Church Street in Amherst at 11 a.m. Registration is required and the classes run from $50 to $120. Halvorson is also offering the class in Milford on Oct 1.
• A business and technology expo will be held from 2:30 to 6 p.m. at the Executive Court Banquet Facility on Mammoth Road in Londonderry.
• The Bedford Farmers’ Market will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. in the St. Elizabeth Seton Parking Lot, 190 Meetinghouse Road in Bedford.
• A Social Security workshop for Baby Boomers and Seniors will be held at 6:15 p.m. at the Financial Planning Adult Education Conference Center, 77 Gilcreast Road in Londonderry.
• It’s GläsNight at Margarita’s in Salem at 6:30 p.m.
• The Merrimack Friends and Families Information Social will be held at 7 p.m. at The Homestead – Merrimack, 641 D.W. Highway in Merrimack. The event is free.
• The documentary film, “See What’s Whispered: The Legacy of Artist David C Baker,” will show at the Portsmouth Public Library at 7 p.m. The event is free.

Wednesday

• The State Employees Association/SEUI 1984 hosts State Employee’s Appreciation Day at the Statehouse plaza from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Mayor James Bouley and the Crisis Center of Central New Hampshire host the first Merrimack County march against domestic and sexual violence, WAM/Walk a Mile In Her Shoes, at 4:45 p.m. at the Statehouse plaza in Concord. Registration is required.
• Paint and Sip, Sunflowers, at The Canvas Roadshow, 176 South River Road in Bedford at 6:30 p.m.
• Dr. Denise Askin, Professor Emerita of St. Anselm College, hosts a discussion focusing on Making Sense of the American Civil War at 6:30 p.m. at the Wadleigh Memorial Library, 49 Nashua St. in Milford.
• Mike Gallant hosts an open mic night at The Draft on South Main Street in Concord beginning at 7 p.m.
• Authors Robin Black and Randy Susan Meyers talk about their latest books at 7 p.m. at Gibson’s Bookstore in Concord.
• Are you 30 to 55 and single? The Arena Sports Bar on High Street in Nashua hosts Dynamic Speed Dating at 7 p.m. Registration is required. Tickets are $35.
• Gene Harrington of Nashua Farmers’ Exchange will present “Intoxicating Spring Bulbs...and Garlic?” as part of the Nashua Garden Club meeting at 7 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 121 Manchester St. in Nashua.
• Experimental and improvised music, featuring a number of local and regional musicians, will happen at the Kimball Jenkins Estate on North Main Street in Concord at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5.

Thursday

• The Amherst Garden Club October daytime meeting will be held at the Messiah Lutheran Church, 303 Route 101 in Amherst at 9 a.m. Pam Hunt will talk about Dragons and Damsels of New Hampshire. The event is free.
• The Concord Farmers’ Market holds its Thursday market from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Steeplegate Mall on Loudon Road.
• Sue Tyrie, the director of Bedford Village Morning School, hosts a six-week workshop offering skills on how to get your children to listen at 6:30 p.m. on Thursdays. Registration is $90.
• The Greater Bedford Womenade Bonfire will be held at the Bedford Village Inn, 2 Olde Bedford Road in Bedford at 6:30 p.m. All proceeds from the White Chocolate Pumpkin Martini will go to the org.
• Mystery writer Deborah Crombie will be at Gibson’s Bookstore to talk about “To Dwell in Darkness,” at 7 p.m.

Friday

• Follow in the footsteps of George Washington when he visited Portsmouth in 1789, at 11 a.m. at The Governor John Langdon House, 143 Pleasant St. in Portsmouth. Tickets are $6 to $12.
• Learn about skydiving at 3:30 p.m. at the Aviation Museum of New Hampshire, 27 Navigator Road in Londonderry. Tickets are $2.50 to $5.
• NH Art Association Celebrates 75 Years in the Arts at the Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery in Portsmouth at 5 p.m.
• “An Empire on the Edge: How Britain Came to Fight America,” will be presented by Nick Bunker at 7 p.m. at Gibson’s Bookstore in Concord.
• The Manhattan Short Film Festival returns to NHTI in Concord beginning Friday and into the weekend.
• Second City: 55th Anniversary Tour will take place at 8 p.m. at The Music Hall in Portsmouth. Tickets are $26-$32.
