What's a Blue Mouse Ear and why do you want one?

The Blue Mouse Ear Hosta is a lovely miniature variety of hosta that grows well in our region and brightens up any backyard garden!

Witten by Su Bennett

When I saw this miniature hosta, I knew it was meant for the fairy garden that I was creating out under the trees in our back yard. Even the name ’Blue Mouse Ears’ sounds like it belongs in a section of your garden especially reserved for tiny delights. This hosta grows in a neat symmetrical clump of textured heart-shaped leaves, with a gentle curl at the edges. In midsummer the soft blue-green foliage is topped by lavender blooms on short stalks. It is a tough resilient plant with leaves that discourage nibbling pests. As a bonus, it is also slug-resistant!

Breeders, Emile & Jane Deckert registered this hosta in 2002. The name came to Emile when he noticed the shape of the unfurling new leaves in the spring and in 2008 it was named the Hosta of the Year!
