Annual Windham PTA Essay Contest

Eighth grade students have until Friday to submit an entry.

The Windham Parent-Teacher Association is currently sponsoring an essay contest for eighth graders in the school district.

Students have until Friday to submit an essay to the PTA website. The rules and other information for the contest are listed below:

Selection Process 

  • Students will be asked to write and submit a 285-315 word essay. The essay topic for 2012 will be:
  • From a book that you have recently read this school year, please describe a character that personally relates to you and why.
  • All entries must be submitted via Windham PTA website by March 30, 2012
  • Entries will be collected by the scholarship chairman and names will be removed so that the judging will be “blind”. The scholarship chairman will be a PTA board member.
  • All entries will be re read and reviewed by the selection committee which will consist of no more than 6 Windham PTA board members. Ideally there will be representation from multiple grade levels. This procedure may be adjusted as required each year.
  • Essays will evaluated on structure, grammar, content/creativity, and adherence to theme.
  • Each member of the selection committee will score the essays according to the rubric provided and submit their scores to the Committee Chair.
  • The Committee Chair will average the scores of the selection committee and determine the winner.
  • In the event of a tie, the entire selection committee will meet to choose the winning essay.

Qualifications

  • All graduating 8th graders from Windham Middle School are eligible

Award

  • $150 scholarship  

Award Recognition:

  • The Middle School Principal will be notified of the selected winner
  • The selected winner will be notified and invited to Academic Recognition Night via phone call and formal invitation
  • The winner will be recognized at the PTA’s Academic Recognition Night.
  • The check will be written directly to the winner and presented at the PTA celebration
