Windham firefighters responded to a basement fire at 17 Appleton Road on Wednesday afternoon. The blaze was first reported as a kitchen fire shortly before 5 p.m., according to emergency radio broadcasts. A later report referred said the fire was in the basement and that firefighters were checking for extensions on the first and second floors. The fire was reportedly knocked down within minutes, and declared under control around 5:15 p.m. Crews are still at the scene at this hour mopping up.
