Blades Visits Windham On Wednesday
The Boston Bruins mascot will promote summer reading at the Nesmith Library on Aug. 9, 2017.

WINDHAM, NH — Boston Bruins mascot, Blades, will be at Windham's Nesmith Library to help promote summer reading as part of the Bruins' "When You Read, You Score!" program, according to the NH Department of Natural & Cultural Resources. Children registered for their public library's summer reading program will have the opportunity to participate in hockey-related crafts, play Bruins trivia games and have their picture taken with Blades. The event takes place from 9 to 11 a.m. on Aug. 9, 2017, at the Nesmith Library, 8 Fellows Road in Windham.
The importance of summer reading has been known for more than a century. (For more information on this and other neighborhood stories, subscribe to Windham NH Patch to receive daily newsletters and breaking news alerts.)
Students who read at least six books during the summer have been found to maintain or improve their reading skills, while those who do not read during the summer can lose a full grade level. The 2017 national summer reading program theme, "Build a Better World," ties in with the Bruins team philosophy, which includes philanthropic activities and community outreach along with fitness and fair play. "When You Read, You Score" is presented by Velcro; "Build a Better World" is facilitated locally by the Children's Librarians of New Hampshire and nationally by the Collaborative Summer Library Program.
