How Do You Define an Excellent Education?
Beginning to look at what an excellent education means to the students of Windham.
I have been thinking about the definition of an adequate education versus what I believe defines an excellent education. The State of New Hampshire has criteria for an adequate education that states all children shall have the opportunity to acquire:
- Skill in reading, writing, and speaking English to enable them to communicate effectively and think creatively and critically.
- Skill in mathematics and familiarity with methods of science to enable them to analyze information, solve problems, and make rational decisions. Knowledge of the biological, physical, and earth sciences to enable them to understand and appreciate the world around them.
- Knowledge of civics and government, economics, geography, and history to enable them to participate in the democratic process and to make informed choices as responsible citizens.
- Grounding in the arts, languages, and literature to enable them to appreciate our cultural heritage and develop lifelong interests and involvement in these areas.
- Sound wellness and environmental practices to enable them to enhance their own well-being, as well as that of others.
- Skills for lifelong learning, including interpersonal and technological skills, to enable them to learn, work, and participate effectively in a changing society.

What, then, constitutes an excellent education?
For the first time in Windham's history, we are developing a K-12 curriculum. Our teachers, staff, and the administration are ensuring our curriculum goes beyond adequate and promotes academic excellence.

I believe a cohesive, K-12 curriculum is part of an excellent education.
When I moved to town and learned Windham did not have public kindergarten, I started the Windham Public Kindergarten Initiative. We were the last state in the country and one of the last towns in the state that did not have public kindergarten.
I believe that public kindergarten is part of an excellent education.
When I heard that state construction aid was in jeopardy of being eliminated, I supported a bond for a new Middle School. I worked with others and gathered over 200 signatures from residents who also supported a bond. I later joined the Facilities Master Planning Committee to ensure we would have a long-term facilities plan to accommodate the growing needs of our community.
I believe that an accredited Middle School is part of an excellent education.
Windham High School will be graduating its first senior class this spring. When you enter the High School gym on Election Day, take a moment to reflect on how the school was built. It was built because individuals like you and me dared to believe in something we had only dreamed about.
I believe that an excellent education is well within our reach. We just have to step through the door on March 13 and vote in support of Windham Public Schools.
