Reflections on the election.

People told me you had to be tough to take on this job and they were not kidding.  I have been writing this blog since October and have gotten more attention in the last six weeks that I have in six months.  Issues that I have been talking about for years are being discussed and debated.  And the signs…. the signs have been a nightmare!

Many good people have helped me along the way.  A long-time acquaintance has become a trusted friend and confident.  Her guidance has been invaluable and is truly appreciated.  My close friend and editorial filter has continued to be honest with me and answer my daily phone calls and texts.  I am so grateful for her support and friendship .  My dear friends who wrote letters, sent emails, stood at the transfer station, put signs in their yards and "liked" my endless comments on Facebook – you have all been amazing.  And I am so lucky to have a family that believes in me, babysits for me, and tells me how proud they are every chance they get.

I realize not everyone is going to agree with me and "like" me all the time.  Part of being a School Board member is being able to listen to constituents who make assumptions about your character and motives and still do your job with integrity and grace.  It is about realizing that your every motive, word, and action is going to be scrutinized and still speak your truth.  It is about knowing that your adversaries are as important as your friends, and remaining committed to what is best for the children of Windham.

I wrote the first part of this post early last week.  It is now early Sunday morning and the election is just 48 hours away.  I considered not submitting this because it seems that my blog is just fuel for the fire that has become Windham politics.  I have never edited my comments so carefully.

When you go to the polls on Tuesday, tread carefully.  Know who you are voting for and why.   Your educated and informed vote matters this year more than ever.  Look for candidates with experience and/or long-standing ties and involvement with the community.  Candidates who are focused on the current issues and well vetted solutions.  Your vote will have a significant impact on the direction of this town.  I implore you to use it wisely.
