Hassan Named Vice Chairwoman of the NGA Education and Workforce Committee
The committee focuses on education, workforce development; hopes to ensure that governors' views are represented in shaping federal policy.
Gov. Maggie Hassan was named vice chairwoman of the National Governors Association (NGA) Education and Workforce Committee by NGA Chairman Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper and NGA Vice Chairman Utah Governor Gary Herbert.
The Education and Workforce Committee has jurisdiction over issues in the area of education (including early childhood, K-12, and post-secondary) as well as in the areas of workforce development. Members of the committee ensure that the governors’ views are represented in the shaping of federal policy.
“In order to keep our economy moving in the right direction, we must provide a rigorous and robust education at every step of the way and ensure that our workforce develops the skills and innovative thinking necessary for success in 21st century jobs,” Hassan said. “Education and workforce development are a constant priority for all governors. I am honored to be named Vice Chair of the 2014-2015 NGA Education and Workforce Committee and I look forward to working with my fellow Governors, educators and the business community on policies that will help develop a workforce that is prepared for good jobs in the innovation economy.”
Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval will serve as chair of the committee.
Since entering office, education and workforce development have been a priority of Gov. Hassan’s. The Governor restored funding for higher education in her bipartisan budget, which led to a tuition freeze at the University System of New Hampshire for the first time in 25 years and a tuition reduction at the state’s community colleges this fall. In addition, she launched a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Task Force to modernize STEM education in our public schools and is working to partner manufacturing companies directly with classes at local schools.
Founded in 1908, NGA is the bipartisan organization of the nation’s governors. Through NGA, governors share best practices, speak with a collective voice on national policy and develop innovative solutions that improve state government and support the principles of federalism.
