The Windham Police Department has announced that it will begin using a new alert system to notify the community of breaking news information.
The service is called Nixle, and is used by over 5,000 public safety agencies.
The community information service delivers texts, emails and web messages to subscribers.

According to WPD, the updates issued to residents offer relevant safety and community information. For example, a message may include "accident on Range Road and Lowell Road, seek alternate routes."

New communication forms continue to evolve and we believe this service will allow us to keep you informed in the most convenient, reliable way possible.
The service is safe and reliable for the department to use. Users can decide exactly what information they want, and which medium they would like it sent to them in.
Once signed up, a user simply has to text the Windham zip code to 888777 to sign up for the Windham alerts.

The department is also asking residents to let five neighbors or friends know about the alert service and to encourage them to register.
