Peter Caron just took up wrestling three months ago, but he’s already getting noticed.
A freshman at Windham High School, Caron took third place in the 106 Class at the N.H. Division III State Championships Feb. 16. That allowed him to compete in the Meet of Champions last weekend at Pinkerton Academy. He was the only freshman from WHS to compete.
“Peter was a huge reason we won the State Champion competition,” said the Jaguars assistant wrestling coach Jack Byrne. There are 54 students on the school’s wrestling team.

“Peter’s been so positive and happy and loving it,” he said. “On the mat and off, he’s a great asset to the team.”
Caron, 14, said he practiced five days a week with his team during the season. He also participates in cross-country and track and field.

“A friend told me to always challenge myself and try to get a little better each day,” he said. “It’s a challenging sport.”
Caron said he won one of the matches at the Meet of Champions and that “considering how experience many of the other wrestlers were, I felt good about it.”
Bryne said the culture of wrestling is a positive one. He added that the middle school is beginning to have a good program to feed into the high school team.
“We’ll be losing 10 seniors on the team in June,” he said. “It’s great to have freshmen like Peter coming up the ranks to strengthen the team.”
