Windham Fire Participates in 'Fight for Air' Stair Climb

On Saturday February 1, 2014 several members of the Windham Fire Department once again participated in the American Lung Association “Fight for Air” stair climb in Boston, Ma. It took place at BNY Mellon Center, One Boston Place, located on Washington Ave. Firefighters wearing their full turn out gear including air packs adding an additional 70 pounds, climbed 41 floors consisting of 82 flights and totaling 789 stairs all to raise money.
This unique fundraiser takes place in prominent skyscrapers, stadiums or arenas and involves walking, running or racing up hundreds of steps. Sometimes called a “vertical road race”, teams and individual participants can use the event as fitness target, as a race, or as a great way to stay active. This year, roughly 240 Fire Department Teams were registered with nearly 1,300 firefighters participating.
The Windham Fire Department team consisted of Lt. Tim Dunn (Team Captain) along with Firefighters Diana Nault, Danielle Dubowik, Gary Kurgan, Dan Doherty, and Pat Robertson. The team also put together an Auxiliary team which team consisting of 5 individuals who also completed the climb. All members of the Windham Fire Department along with the Auxiliary team completed the stair climb in 10 minutes or less and did an outstanding job in their fund raising efforts.Overall, the Team ranked 7th overall in fundraising with $6,665.00 raised. Firefighter Gary Kurgan ranked 4th overall in individual rankings, raising nearly $3,000. Firefighter Danielle Dubowik also received recognition for placing 3rd overall in her age group overall.
