1,000-Pound Shark Located Near NJ Coastline

Ironbound, an adult shark spanning about 12 feet, was spotted 150 miles away from the Jersey Shore in April.

NEW JERSEY - A nearly 1,000-pound great white shark has been reported swimming off the coast of New Jersey, according to OCEARCH.

Ironbound, an adult shark first located off the coast of Canada in October 2019, was last reported on April 28 around 10:30 p.m. about 150 miles away from the Jersey Shore. He’s about 12 feet and 4 inches, weighing in at 998 pounds.

The shark is named after West Ironbound Island near Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, where he was first tagged. He's about 20 years old and has logged over 13,000 miles since tracking began, Bob Hueter, chief scientist at OCEARCH, told CNN.

Historically, Ironbound has been located around the Jersey Shore between May and November, traveling south to Florida during the winter.

“Mating season is over, we think, and Ironbound is on his way north to get into some good feeding ground and bulk up again for the next year,” Hueter said.
