119 NJ Towns Participating In Seat Belt Crackdown: See The List
Federal money will pay for increased road patrols, seat belt checkpoints and other enforcement initiatives during the campaign.
NEW JERSEY — Not wearing a seatbelt could cost Garden State motorists under a new law enforcement campaign that officially kicked off Monday, according to the state Division of Highway Traffic Safety.
In a release issued by Attorney General Matthew Platkin, officials said nearly 120 police departments across the state are sharing $766,000 in federal funding to enforce a new "Click It Or Ticket" campaign and crack down on drivers not wearing their seat belts.
The funding will help agencies increase road patrols, seat belt checkpoints and other initiatives, the release said.

The campaign continues through June 2.
"Seat belts save lives – we want that message to be loud and clear. And the campaign we are announcing today will provide law enforcement agencies with resources to reinforce that basic but critical point," Platkin said in a statement. "As we prepare for the busy summer driving season, we are laser-focused on ensuring safety on roadways across New Jersey."

According to state data from 2022, 140 people died in crashes on New Jersey roadways because they weren't wearing seat belts. That's 39 percent of all motor vehicle fatalities, state officials said, compared to 44 percent nationally.
Last year, law enforcement agencies participating in the “Click It or Ticket” campaign issued nearly 7,000 seat belt citations statewide.
