The tests aim to assess how well New Jersey students are meeting the Student Learning Standards set by the state Department of Education for each grade level. The assessments are used by the state to determine whether students need additional help and whether a school is meeting students' educational needs.

Concerns about student performance have been heightened since the pandemic, and while scores decreased for a few years, the 2024-25 assessments showed improvement, according to state officials.

In English/language arts, 53 percent of the students statewide showed proficiency. But math proficiency was 41 percent and science was 27 percent.

To be considered proficient, students need to score above 750 — on a scale of 650 to 850 — on math and English/language arts. The science scale is 100 to 300, with 200 points considered proficient, according to Pearson, the company that handled the testing last year.

Below are the mean scores for English/language arts, math and science for grades 3 through 5 every school that assessed students in New Jersey in the spring of 2025.

For comparison, the mean scores — the statewide average — for the Spring 2025 assessments are as follows:

Grade 3: English/language arts, 742; math 748

Grade 4: English/language arts, 749; math 746

Grade 5: English/language arts, 750; math 745; science 173.

The table is searchable by school, district and county so you can see how your school compares with other districts and within your county. If you are having trouble seeing or using the table, it can be found at this link.
