Potentially Record-Breaking Heat Sparks Advisories Across NJ

Eleven counties are under heat advisories as the first heat wave of the year cooks New Jersey.

Eleven New Jersey counties are under a heat advisory this week as potentially record-setting high temperatures cook the Garden State.

Morris, Somerset, Warren and Hunterdon counties are under the advisory until 8 p.m. Tuesday; while Mercer, Gloucester, Camden, Burlington, Middlesex, western Monmouth and Ocean counties have the advisory in place until 8 p.m. Wednesday.

"Record setting high temperatures are quite possible through Wednesday, with maximum heat indices nearing 100 degrees during peak heating each afternoon," the National Weather Service said. "Given the intensity of this early season stretch of heat and humidity, we are not acclimated to it yet and therefore impacts could be greater if precautions are not taken."

High temperatures this week are expected to be in the low-to-mid-90s, though it may feel like up to 98 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures this high, combined with humidity, can cause heat illnesses, forecasters warned.

"Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors," the National Weather Service said.

Tuesday will be the hottest day of the warm streak, forecasters said.

Wednesday remains uncertain, National Weather Service forecasters said, as an approaching cold front may move in quickly.

However, "it will still be abnormally warm," forecasters said.

"Showers and thunderstorms will accompany this front as it passes through the region," the National Weather Service said.

It's too early to have any specifics on those storms, National Weather Service forecasters said. However, it looks to usher in a more unsettled period in time for Memorial Day weekend.
