Severe thunderstorms are possible on Thursday afternoon as a cold front moves through the state, snarling evening travel heading into the long Juneteenth weekend in New Jersey, forecasters said.
According to the National Weather Service, all of New Jersey is under a Level 2 of 5 risk for severe weather on Thursday.
Forecasters said thunderstorms in the Garden State are most likely between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m., with strong winds making landfall before the rain.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service said wind gusts could reach up to 30-40 mph, while AccuWeather’s forecasters said some gusts could reach 60 to 70 mph.
The cold front won't do much to lower the temperatures on Thursday, with the heat climbing into the lower and mid-90s along and southeast of the I-95 corridor.
Due to the strong winds, a high risk of rip current is also in effect along the Jersey Shore, making swimming in the ocean dangerous without a lifeguard.
Friday is on track to be calmer, with highs in the 80s and wind gusts around 20 mph, forecasters said.
The weekend is also expected to be dry and sunny, forecasters said, with temperatures in the 80s.
