Multiple rounds of storms with heavy rain, damaging winds, flooding, hail and more are set to return to New Jersey Tuesday into Wednesday, prompting weather alerts in 14 counties.
"This looks to be another event with multiple rounds. The first being the showers and thunderstorms in the morning, the second being the more widespread coverage in the afternoon and evening, and another round into Tuesday night with the cold front," National Weather Service forecasters said Monday.
New Jersey will be under an enhanced risk of severe weather Tuesday, which is level 3 of 5.
Flood watches will be in effect Tuesday in Hunterdon, Morris, Somerset, Middlesex, Monmouth, Mercer, Gloucester, Camden, northwestern Burlington, Passaic, Hudson, Bergen, Essex and Union counties.
Flash flooding will especially be a risk for the Tuesday morning commute.
"Areas of greatest concern will be mainly around the I-78 and I- 80 corridors across northeast PA and northern NJ, some areas of which were hit hard with flash flooding just this past weekend," the National Weather Service said.
Showers and storms will start to develop Tuesday morning, becoming more widespread throughout the day, National Weather Service forecasters said. Things will peak Tuesday afternoon/evening.
"Activity in the afternoon and evening looks to pose the greatest and most widespread risk for severe weather with the primary hazard being damaging wind gusts," the National Weather Service said.
Excessive rain is also possible.
Storms will linger at least into Wednesday morning.
"Primary threat with any severe storms is likely to be damaging wind gusts in addition to heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding, particularly in the more urbanized areas along the immediate coast," the National Weather Service said.
The risk of severe storms is lessened for Wednesday.
By late day Wednesday, conditions will have cleared up.
The rest of the week is expected to be dry and sunny, forecasters said.
