Severe thunderstorms are in the forecast for Tuesday, with damaging winds, large hail and a tornado or two all possible, according to the National Weather Service.
Most of New Jersey is at risk for severe weather. The only exception is the far southern tip of the state.
Storms are likely to form between 5 p.m. and 12 a.m., though an isolated storm before this cannot be ruled out, National Weather Service forecasters said.
"Damaging winds will be the primary threat with this setup, though large hail and a couple tornadoes are also notable threats," the National Weather Service said.
Flash flooding will not be a significant threat with these storms. However, it cannot be entirely ruled out, and urban areas and areas that have recently received a lot of rain may experience localized flash flooding.
A hot and humid day is in store prior to the storms. A heat advisory will be in place from 12 p.m. until 8 p.m. in Mercer, Camden, Gloucester and northwestern Burlington counties.
This will be the beginning of a stormy week for the Garden State. Severe storms will again be possible Wednesday and Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
However, the details aren't set in stone for those storms.
"The details regarding any severe thunderstorms beyond today still remain unclear," the National Weather Service said Tuesday morning.
The level of severity will depend on how things play out each day.
Each day will again bring the risk of damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes. The flash flood risk is still low but given that there are multiple days with heavy rainfall, localized flooding is possible.
Conditions are likely to dry out just in time for Labor Day weekend, with below-normal temperatures and low humidity in store.
