Grocery Chain Closing Locations Across U.S: See NJ Impacts

A beloved grocery chain has been closing stores across the U.S., though one New Jersey location remains open.

Founded in Greensboro, North Carolina, in 1982, The Fresh Market is known for its prepared meals, bakery products, seasonal flowers, produce and more.

In 2025, the chain was voted the Best Grocery Store in America by USA Today's 10Best Readers' Choice Awards and was also recognized in other grocery categories such as best bakery, produce, deli and prepared food.

In 2026, however, the chain has been closing locations across the country, according to a report from Inc.

In mid-April, the market closed its store in the Chestnut Ridge Shopping Center in Montvale, New Jersey.

In a statement to NJ BIZ, a spokesperson said that as a growing company, they "regularly evaluate our store portfolio to ensure alignment with our strategic goals."

"After careful consideration, we have made the decision not to renew our lease in Montvale," the spokesperson said.

The Montvale store closure joins others in Alabama, Illinois, and Virginia so far this year, Inc. reported.

Though multiple Fresh Market stores have closed, the chain still has an open New Jersey location in Bedminster, as well as other stores across the U.S.
