Confirmed NJ Tornado Had Winds Of 105 MPH, Was 9th Of 2023 So Far: NWS

Fierce storms Monday night produced a tornado in Somerset County. See what storm surveyors found:

SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ — New Jersey's ninth tornado of 2023 began along a New Jersey Transit line in Somerset County and had peak winds of more than 100 miles per hour, according to details released Wednesday by the National Weather Service (NWS).

An EF-1 tornado with peak winds of 105 miles per hour began along the NJ Transit line near Bernardsville, according to National Weather Service surveyors. At the start, the tornado dropped numerous trees onto the train tracks and snapped the trunk of around 10 trees before moving northeast.

The 475-yard-wide tornado traveled 1.4 miles through the borough before dissipating at 3:34 p.m.

“The EF-1 rating is primarily based on the number of trees with snapped trunks with the highest concentration in a single location along the NJ Transit line,” said the weather service.
