Daylight Saving Time Starts: When Will Sun Set Sunday In NJ

NEW JERSEY — Clocks “spring forward” Sunday for the beginning of daylight saving time, and that means an extra hour of sunshine at the end of the day for the next nine months.

When the sun sets Sunday evening depends on where in New Jersey you live. In North Jersey, the sun will set around 6:59 p.m. while in Central Jersey, expect the sun to dip below the horizon a bit later at 7:02 p.m. In South Jersey, sunset should be around 7:03 p.m.

Here’s when the sun is expected to set in other New Jersey cities:

• Jersey City: 6:59 p.m.
• Paterson: 6:59 p.m.
• Elizabeth: 6:59 p.m.
• Edison: 7 p.m.
• Middletown: 6:59 p.m.
• Piscataway: 7 p.m.
• New Brunswick: 7 p.m.
• Toms River: 7 p.m.
• Brick: 6:59 p.m.
• Cherry Hill: 7:03 p.m.
• Atlantic City: 7:01 p.m.

Keep in mind that sunrise will be an hour later than you’re accustomed to with the beginning of daylight saving time. Sunrise will be around 7:13 a.m. in North Jersey on Sunday, 7:15 a.m. in Central Jersey and 7:16 a.m. in South Jersey.

Although the switch to daylight saving time is often associated with the beginning of spring, the vernal equinox doesn't occur until Tuesday, March 19.

This year, daylight saving time will last from 2 a.m. Sunday, March 10, until 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 3. Only two states — Hawaii and most of Arizona — have opted out of the Uniform Time Act of 1966, which mandated daylight saving time.

The Time Act could be changed to allow for year-round daylight saving time, as legislation passed in the Senate last year provides. Or it could eliminate it altogether in favor of year-round standard time, as some representatives in the House have suggested. The Sunshine Protection Act hasn’t budged since the Senate passed it through in early 2022.
