NEW JERSEY — Rain is expected to turn into snow Thursday night in New Jersey, with some of the higher elevations getting up to 6 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory in Morris, western Passaic, Sussex and Warren counties, which will be in effect from 7 p.m. Thursday until 10 a.m. Friday.

An advisory is the least severe level of alert the National Weather Service puts out.

Snow in western Passaic County is "highly elevation dependent," according to the National Weather Service. Accumulations will likely be less than 2 inches, but 2 to 4 inches is expected at higher elevations.

The most snow is expected overnight into Friday morning, AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Adam Douty said.

This could make for a dangerous Friday morning commute, and the National Weather Service is warning that roads will be slippery. There might be "a slushy accumulation" in grassy areas or on elevated surfaces.

Gusty winds and rain mixed with snow showers will linger throughout Friday, finally tapering off by evening. Highs probably will not reach above 40 degrees.

"A rather winter-like day, for sure," the National Weather Service said.
