NJ Heat Wave Sets Nearly 2 Dozen New Records: NWS

NEW JERSEY — Last week's punishing heat wave brought days of muggy, sweltering conditions to the Garden State and broke nearly two dozen temperature records in cities across the tri-state area, according to forecasters.

Between nine National Weather Service climate sites, forecasters recorded 20 broken or tied record high temperatures or record high low temperatures between June 19 and June 23.

Another record was broken Sunday when the mercury soared to 99 degrees in Newark, according to a NJ Advance Media report. The previous record was 97 degrees, set in 1965.

At least one New Jersey town — Berkeley Township in Ocean County — reached 100 degrees on Sunday, according to reports from the Rutgers NJ Weather Network.

New Jersey got a long-awaited break from the heat Monday when temperatures returned to the mid-80s throughout most of the state; however, the reprieve wasn't expected to last long.

Temperatures are expected to spike again Tuesday with highs in the upper 80s and lower 90s.

On Wednesday, a heat advisory will be in effect from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for parts of Central and South Jersey, according to the National Weather Service. Counties affected include Somerset, Middlesex, western Monmouth, Mercer, Gloucester, Camden, Burlington and Ocean.

On Wednesday, temperatures could reach the mid- to upper 90s with heat index values nearing 100, according to NWS forecasters. Storms could also develop Wednesday afternoon, forecasters said. The primary threats are damaging winds, localized flooding and tornadoes.
