NEW JERSEY — The potential for severe weather returns to the forecast for New Jersey mid-week as meteorologists are monitoring a system moving across the Great Lakes that is predicted to pass over New Jersey on Wednesday.

As for timing, The Weather Channel is predicting the storms will be mainly in the afternoon, with a clearing likely by the early evening. Wednesday's potential for storms follows rainfall Monday that was “much needed” in the region, according to the National Weather Service. Western portions of the state are "abnormally dry" according to the most recent U.S. Drought Monitor report.

"Under the strong June sun during the late morning on Wednesday, rising warm air will race upward and cause clouds to rapidly build through the afternoon, growing into heavy showers and severe thunderstorms," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Brett Anderson said.
