Snowfall Predictions Increase For NJ: See Latest

NEW JERSEY — Forecasters are now saying up to 5 inches of snow are possible in some parts of New Jersey, as a storm moves along the Northeast coast that could make for a messy commute Tuesday.

The storm moving into the region Monday is anticipated to bring snow to parts of the state that have not had measurable snowfall since 2022, forecasters added.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for all of New Jersey's 21 counties until Tuesday afternoon. As of 4 p.m., the advisory is active in all counties except Hudson, Bergen, Essex, Passaic, and Union, where it begins later Monday night.

The forecast is calling for snow beginning Monday afternoon and continuing through the evening with predictions of 3 to 5 inches of accumulation north and west of Interstate 95, and 1 to 4 inches south and east of I-95.

A mix of snow and freezing rain is possible and roads will be slippery, the weather service said, as frigid temperatures turn surfaces icy.

Communities on the far south Shore could see very little snow Monday, then rain Tuesday. Still, a glaze of ice is possible overnight.

Slippery roads could linger into the morning commute especially east of Trenton and along the Shore, as the snow is expected to change over to mixed precipitation on Tuesday, the weather service said.

The snow and mixed precipitation is expected to taper off by Tuesday afternoon.

Bundle up, as high temperatures are expected to hover around 32 degrees or just below for most of the state, with colder temperatures north and west of I-95. The coldest temperatures of the year are expected on Wednesday, with daytime wind chills in the single digits and teens, the forecast said.

Here is the extended forecast through Wednesday, from the National Weather Service:

MONDAY: Light snow beginning Monday afternoon in the southern part of the state and spreading to the north and west by evening. High temperatures near 27 in the northern part of the state and closer to 32 degrees to the south and along the Shore.

MONDAY NIGHT: Snow likely, mainly after midnight. Cloudy, with low temperatures in the low to mid-20s.

TUESDAY: In North Jersey, snow mainly before noon. In Central Jersey, snow changes over to a rain-snow-sleet mix around 10 a.m. that will continue until about 1 p.m., then shifts to a chance of snow and rain after 1 p.m. Along the Shore, the snow is expected to change over to rain about 9 a.m., with rain continuing for the rest of the day. High temperatures around 32 degrees in the north up to near 41 at the Shore.

TUESDAY NIGHT: Partly cloudy with temperatures dropping into the teens overnight, with lows near 14 in the north and near 16 in the central part of the state and at the Shore.

WEDNESDAY: Sunny with highs in the low 20s across the state and west winds of 10 to 15 mph.
