Strong Mid-Week Storm Could Dump 3 Inches of Rain On NJ

Up to 3 inches of rain could fall in parts of New Jersey with this week's storm, which is badly needed as the state is still in a drought.

NEW JERSEY — Up to 3 inches of rain is forecast for New Jersey as a storm moves in this week, bringing with it heavy winds and the possibility of localized flooding.

A weaker storm Monday will result in rainfall amounts of about a half-inch, according to the National Weather Service. This is anticipated mostly in late morning to the afternoon, with rain completely tapering off by sunset.

The bigger story is Tuesday into Wednesday, when widespread rain will drench the state and continue for most of, if not all of Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.

Heavier rain is likely Wednesday afternoon, with 2 to 3 inches of rain forecast across the state, the National Weather Service said. There may even be a few rumbles of thunder, particularly in South Jersey.

“An intense band of rain may develop with gusty winds that can really hamper travel during the afternoon and evening commutes on Wednesday from the Carolinas to southern New England,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said. “Thunder and lightning could accompany the intense rain and urban flooding potential.”

Due to the ongoing drought, the rain will be beneficial.

“While urban flooding seems likely with the event, because of the long-term drought, the rain should be well handled by most small streams and all of the major rivers,” Sosnowski said. “This rain can bring yet another boost to streams, lakes and reservoir levels.”

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, as of Dec. 5 the northern half of the state is in “severe” drought conditions, while the southern half is “extreme.”

Temperatures will be warmer than the cold we've been experiencing, so precipitation will only be rain, not snow. After the storm ends on Wednesday night, we will see a cold front move in. However, the storm should end quickly, so this shouldn't cause rain to turn to snow in New Jersey.
