Stormy Labor Day Weekend Possible For NJ: Latest Forecast

NEW JERSEY — Summer is coming to an unofficial end this weekend as Labor Day approaches, but the sendoff may not be an entirely pleasant one weather-wise, according to the latest forecast.

Forecasters aren't entirely sure what Labor Day weekend will look like as of Thursday morning with warm and cold fronts crossing into the Garden State, the National Weather Service said. Still, they say things should be "fairly benign" until Saturday, when things begin to change.

"Some" isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms could hit, "but nothing of widespread significance is anticipated," according to the National Weather Service.

Later Saturday into Saturday night, widespread showers and thunderstorms are possible, but the magnitude depends on the timing of an approaching cold front, forecasters said.

"The showers and thunderstorms in the East will be most widespread and intense in the afternoon and evening, although there may be some exceptions," AccuWeather forecasters said in their prediction for the holiday weekend.

Some areas could dry out Sunday, but some could experience more showers. It all depends on the front's speed, AccuWeather forecasters said.

"It is possible there is another big flash flood event somewhere in the East as the front slows its forward speed from Saturday to Sunday," AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Meteorologist Paul Pastelok warned.

Drenching showers and strong storms may hit South Jersey beaches on Sunday, AccuWeather forecasters said.

The good news is that Labor Day itself looks to be "dry and comfortable," according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures will be slightly below average to around average with comfortable humidity levels.
