Weekend Storm Could Dump 3 Inches On NJ: Latest Forecast

The storm could dump 3 inches of heavy rain on New Jersey causing localized and coastal flooding.

NEW JERSEY — Weekend plans may not be a total bust in New Jersey. Saturday will kick off with sunny skies and warmer temps before the weather takes a downhill turn on Sunday night bringing heavy rain and gusty winds to the area.

"Conditions remain dry and seasonable through Saturday. A strong system is forecast to move up the coast Sunday into Monday. This system may bring heavy rain resulting in flooding of creeks/streams, strong winds, and coastal flooding," according to US National Weather Service Philadelphia/Mount Holly(NWS).

No snow or wintry precipitation is expected during the storm as temperatures will remain in the mid to high 50s through Monday.

Rain will begin falling after 1 p.m. with an 80 percent chance of dropping between a 10th and quarter of an inch.

Things will pick up on Sunday night into Monday morning when heavy rain is expected to fall. Another 2 inches could fall in New Jersey in that timeframe.

Rain will then tamper off sometime before 1 p.m. on Monday. In total, the area should get hit with almost 3 inches from the storm.

The storm is the result of a system that is moving into the South at the end of this week. It will then gather steam from the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico early this weekend before rocketing up the East Coast on Sunday and Monday.

The storm will follow "along a path that is typical of storms during the winter months but carrying an amount of moisture usually seen during the summer," according to AccuWeather.

In light of the recent storm we just had last weekend, some flooding of urban areas, creaks, and streams are possible," according to NWS.

Additionally, strong winds from the storm, particularly near the coast can lead to beach erosion and coastal flooding, said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Joe Lundberg.

"Minor to potentially locally moderate coastal flooding, especially with the Sunday night high tide. Greatest surge may be up Delaware Bay," according to NWS.
