BRADLEY BEACH, NJ - A 19-year-old remains in critical condition two days after he was pulled from the water at an unguarded Jersey Shore beach, authorities said.
The teen swam out “over his head” and became distressed in the water while swimming at the Kent Avenue Beach on Friday shortly before 6 p.m., Bradley Beach Police Chief Len Guida told Patch.
The 19-year-old “succumbed to exhaustion and slipped under the water,” where he stayed for around 20 minutes, Guida said.
The victim was found by rescue swimmers, carried into shore and resuscitated; he was transported to the Jersey Shore University Medical Center where he remains in critical condition, Guida said.
Lifeguards stopped patrolling the beach at 5 p.m., Guida said. The victim and three of his friends went swimming in unprotected waters after lifeguarding hours were over.
