Asbury Park Explores Creation Of Human Rights Council

ASBURY PARK – In the ongoing effort to better serve the community, the mayor and City Council are seeking the opinion of residents on human rights priorities within the city of Asbury Park.

The results will be used to gauge the need for a Human Rights Council. Responses for this voluntary survey will be collected through November 15, 2019. Surveys are anonymous and will be collected through an online and paper form.

The proposed Human Rights Council would be charged with making recommendations to the governing body to strengthen the promotion and protection of human rights in Asbury Park. The council's activities can include advocating for victims, creating resources for schools, improving relations with governmental agencies, and educating employers and employees on bias.

“We’ve spent the last nine months meeting with various community and religious leaders, and evaluating the work other municipalities, such as Red Bank, have done on this front,” said Deputy Mayor Amy Quinn, “Implementing this survey is the last stage before making a determination on forming a Human Rights Council for Asbury Park.”

“While the survey is voluntary, we are mailing a copy to all residents with the hopes that as many citizens as possible will participate and voice their opinions on human rights priorities,” said Councilperson Yvonne Clayton, “Our goal is to protect the diversity of our City and ensure Asbury Park remains a place of understanding and tolerance.”
