Asbury Park Man Arrested After Wall Police Gave Aid During Car Trouble
After his car broke down in Wall Twp., police stopped to help — and the man was found to be wanted on federal gun charges:
ASBURY PARK, NJ — An Asbury Park man wanted on a U.S. Marshals warrant was arrested last Thursday when Wall Police stopped to help him when his car broke down, according to Wall Twp. Police.
The Asbury Park man was identified as Bernard Smith, 41. His car became disabled at Highway 138 and Club Drive in Wall Township at 2:30 p.m. last Thursday, Jan. 26, police said.
When Wall Police stopped to render aid, they found an active warrant for his arrest issued by the U.S. Marshal's Office. Smith was wanted for owning a gun while he was on probation.

When the Wall police officer arrived to help the disabled car last Thursday on Rt. 138 east, he notified Wall Police dispatch of the disabled vehicle's registration. Dispatch ran the registration through the DMV, and found that the registered owner of the vehicle (Smith) had an active warrant for his arrest.
Smith was arrested and brought to Monmouth County Correctional Institution, pending a future court appearance, police said.
