Asbury Park Man Who Threatened Schools Now In Police Custody

An Asbury Park man is now in custody after his mother called police Wednesday, saying he was "going to shoot up a school, like in Texas."

ASBURY PARK, NJ — An Asbury Park man is now in custody after his mother called police Wednesday and told them her son made suspicious remarks about the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas, according to Asbury Park Police.

This sent all Asbury Park schools into lockdown Wednesday. However, the man, William Bailey, 32, has since been taken into police custody and the lockdown is now lifted.

According to Asbury Park Police, Bailey's mother called them at approximately 9:20 Wednesday morning.

She asked police to do a welfare check on her son due to an alarming message he left her. His message said he was "going to shoot up a school, like in Texas," said police.

Police immediately notified the Asbury Park school district, which in turn placed all the schools in a lockdown status Wednesday, said police.

William’s present Asbury Park address and he was not at home.

A description of his clothing, physical appearance and photograph was relayed to units canvasing the city. William was located approximately twenty minutes later in the Absury Park municipal parking lot.

William was taken into custody and charged with terroristic threats. He was also found to have an active warrant for his arrest out of Plainfield. Due to additional statements and behavior he displayed, William was taken to a local hospital for a crisis evaluation.

He currently remains in police custody, as of Thursday morning.
