Parking and Vehicle Safety

Working together on parking helps crews plow more quickly and reduces the risk of damage.

• When possible, park vehicles off street in driveways before and during the storm
• Move vehicles away from trees, utility poles, and other potential hazards
• Avoid parking in low-lying or flood-prone areas, especially near the lakes
• After snowfall ends, please follow alternate side parking rules so plows can fully clear roadways and avoid the possibility of towing:
• Park on the odd-numbered side of the street first
• Move to the even-numbered side the following day
• On one-way streets, park on the left side in the direction of traffic flow
• Alternate side parking does not apply in posted snow emergency no-parking areas

Garbage and Recycling Placement

Small adjustments with containers help keep travel lanes open and crews working safely.
• Do not place garbage or recycling containers in the roadway
• Keep containers on the curb near the street to support plowing operations and safe parking during the storm
