Asbury Park Teen Boy, 16, Charged With Fatal Shooting

A 16-year-old teen boy has been arrested and charged with the fatal shooting​ of a 19-year-old teen last Friday in Asbury Park.

ASBURY PARK, NJ — A 16-year-old local teen boy has been arrested and charged with this fatal shooting of a 19-year-old teen last Friday in Asbury Park, said Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Lori Linskey.

The Asbury Park boy, whose name was not released because he is a minor, has been charged with juvenile complaints of murder and two related weapons offenses.

He was taken into police custody without incident Tuesday evening.

The fatal shooting occurred shortly after 5:45 p.m. Friday, July 8 on the 100 block of Prospect Avenue, near the intersection with Atlantic Avenue.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers found 19-year-old Dariel Vernet of Asbury Park, who had sustained multiple gunshot injuries. He was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead approximately one hour later.
