75 Southern Regional Students Make National Jr. Honor Society

MANAHAWKIN, NJ — Seventy-five eighth-graders from Southern Regional Middle School were inducted Oct. 16 into the National Junior Honor Society. The group pledged to uphold scholarship, citizenship, leadership, service and character at the induction ceremony.
Southern graduate and physical education teacher and coach Jenna Lombardo-Adams spoke to the inductees and their families. She encouraged students to lead their peers by example and embrace the culture of care at Southern.

Middle School Students Go To D.C.

Eighth-graders visited Washington, D.C., Oct. 10-11. The students made stops at the Smithsonian American History, Natural History, and Air and Space Museums.
The group also took pictures at the White House and visited several famous monuments, such as the Lincoln, Vietnam, Korean and Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorials.
The final day included the Arlington National Cemetary, where students observed the changing of the guard and participated in a wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Afterwards, the group of almost 400 met at the Grant Memorial for a group picture in front of the Capitol building.
Health & Sciences Club Guest Speaker
The Health & Science Club had its first guest speaker, nurse practitioner Jeff Bates. He provided a synopsis of his job in the operating room, as well as how to suture. Forty-two students go to suture back together their injured "patient."

Sports Shorts
Football senior Will DeVane was named the 2019 Larry Dunfee Award Homecoming Game MVP on Oct. 15 in the Rams' 14-7 victory over Freehold Township. The Stafford Police PBA sponsors the award. DeVane also competes in basketball and lacrosse.

The gymnastics team defeated Toms River North, 105-101 Oct. 18. Senior Gianna Antinora was honored.
The following were named Southern Regional High School "Athletes of the Week" for Oct. 1-15:
Jaiden Brown, sophomore, football: Brown has been a presence on offense and defense. He currently has 997 yards rushing with 13 touchdowns and three interceptions.
Gianna Schiattarella, senior, volleyball: The senior has helped the Rams earn the 2019 Shore Conference A South Championship. She eclipsed the 500-kill mark for the second straight season and was named Southern Invitational MVP and First-Team All A South Division.

Jackson Braddock won the 2019 Shore Conference Individual Championship on Oct. 24 for the boys cross country team. He's the first male cross county runner to win the Shore title in school history.
