ACME Signs Lease For Former Genuardi's Store In Barnegat

New store in Barnegat Village Square expected to open in February.

Barnegat Township Committeeman Albert Bille decided to change the subject at a recent meeting from township police dispatchers’ future to the new Acme store slated to open in February.

“To those that called us liars, to those that said we were making stuff up, to those that members of this committee put fake signs on the ACME...today they started hiring.”

ACME recently signed a lease for the 50,000-square-foot building in the Barnegat Village Square - the sight of the former Genuardi’s store that left Barnegat back in 2012.

The site is scheduled to open its doors in next month, said Ed Walters, Jr., president and founder of Walters Group, which developed the shopping center in 1998.

“We are excited about ACME’s investment in Barnegat,” Walters said. “The new location will have the opportunity to fill a need for residents since the community has been without a local supermarket for several years.”

The existing site will will be renovated, he said.

Current tenants at Barnegat Village Square include Burger King and an additional 22,000 square feet of smaller retail shops.

ACME Markets recently expanded its store count to 178 stores across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and now New York and Connecticut. ACME continues to reinvest and expand at the Jersey Shore, according to a release from the Walters Group..
