September Is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month In Stafford

The measure recognizes September as a time to honor those affected by ovarian cancer and support awareness efforts.

MANAHAWKIN, NJ — Stafford Mayor Robert Henken proclaimed September as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in Stafford at the latest Township Council meeting.

The proclamation says the "Turn The Towns Teal" campaign is intended to create awareness about ovarian cancer and recognize people affected by the disease.

The text of the proclamation states that about 19,68 women will receive a new diagnosis of ovarian cancer and that more than 12,720 women will die from it. It describes ovarian cancer as the deadliest of female reproductive diseases and says families, friends and communities across the country support people who are fighting the illness while offering hope for a cancer-free future.

The proclamation also says ovarian cancers are difficult to detect early because there is no simple and reliable screening method and symptoms are often not clear until later stages. It says that by recognizing warning signs and unexplained changes, women can increase the likelihood of detecting ovarian cancer at an early stage, when treatment is most effective.

The proclamation says the nation pauses during National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month to support people who know the pain of the disease, honor those who have died and renew a commitment to more effective prevention, detection and treatment. It also says the township stands with people who continue to fight the disease, with those who have lost loved ones and with advocates, medical researchers and health care providers.
