Stafford Shares Back-To-School Road Safety Reminder For Drivers, Walkers

STAFFORD, NJ — Stafford Township is reminding drivers, walkers and bicyclists to slow down and stay alert as students return to school this week and traffic increases around roads, sidewalks, crosswalks and bus stops.

In a back-to-school message, the township said the start of the school year brings busier travel conditions during morning and afternoon hours. The notice was directed to people driving to work, dropping students off at school, walking or biking, and said extra patience can help keep children safe.

The township urged drivers to slow down in school zones and watch carefully for children crossing the street. It also said motorists should be ready for school buses making frequent stops and should obey flashing lights and stop signals. The message further advised residents to stay alert at crosswalks and bus stops, especially during morning and afternoon hours.

The township also encouraged drivers to put phones away and keep their attention on the road. It said pedestrians and bicyclists should be given plenty of space and that residents should expect more children traveling to and from school.

Students were also included in the safety reminder. The township said children should look both ways, use designated crossings whenever possible, stay aware of their surroundings and never assume a driver sees them.

Mayor Robert Henken and the Stafford Township Council also shared a message for the school community.

"Mayor Henken and the Stafford Township Council wish all of our students, families, teachers, school staff, and bus drivers a safe and successful school year!" the post said.

The message closed with another request for patience as the school routine resumes.

"Give yourself a few extra minutes, pack a little extra patience, and help us keep Stafford's students safe," according to the township message.
