STAFFORD, NJ — Stafford Township's Emergency Management Council and Office of Emergency Management have achieved accreditation through the Emergency Management Accreditation New Jersey program, effective Sept. 15.
The township said the designation makes Stafford the second municipal emergency management office in New Jersey and the first in Ocean County to earn the accreditation.
According to the township, the recognition followed a review of Stafford's emergency management program, including preparedness, response, recovery, training, communications and operational procedures. The township said the process included independent reviews and on-site assessments, and that Stafford demonstrated compliance with all 28 standards evaluated.
The township described the accreditation as a sign of its commitment to a professional, coordinated and continuously improving emergency management program serving residents, businesses and the broader community. According to the announcement, the accreditation is valid for four years, through Sept. 15, 2030.
Mayor Henken and the Township Council congratulated the Stafford Township Office of Emergency Management, which is led by Heidi Michel, for leading the effort. The announcement said earning the accreditation required preparation, documentation, coordination and dedication.
The township also recognized the Stafford Township Police Department and other township departments and personnel that assisted during the process. According to the announcement, the milestone reflects interdepartmental collaboration and a shared focus on community safety and well-being.
Residents will have a chance to see the recognition made official next month. The township said representatives from the accreditation agency plan to attend the Oct. 13 Township Council meeting to formally present the accreditation certificate.
The Emergency Management Accreditation New Jersey program evaluates local emergency management operations against statewide standards. Stafford said it plans to build on the accreditation as it continues working to strengthen its emergency management capabilities.
