SURF CITY, NJ — As cranberry harvest season begins across South Jersey, the Ocean County Library's Long Beach Island Branch will host a program focused on the region's bog history and one of its best-known company towns.
"It's Cranberry Time!" is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, at the branch in Surf City. The free program will offer a look at Pine Barrens harvesting history through Double Trouble Village, a former company town tied to cranberry production.
According to the program announcement, attendees will get a glimpse of local Pine Barrens harvesting history and witness the evolution of the cranberry bogs at Double Trouble Village. The village housed one of the state's largest cranberry operations for most of the 20th century, according to the announcement.
Interpretive staffers from Double Trouble Village Historic Site are set to present dramatic images and rare videos showing changes in the way cranberries have been gathered over time. The presentation will include labor-intensive dry picking as well as modern water harvesting that is still performed today, according to the announcement.
