BARNEGAT, NJ — When you picture a traditional barbershop, you probably imagine one of those striped poles out front. Those stripes have been restored to a local historic barbershop that dates back to the late 1800s.
The Barnegat Historical Society announced that the striping on the porch posts at the George Hopper Barber Shop has been properly restored.
The restoration was completed by the society's historian, Curt Watts.
This barbershop sits in a building that was constructed in 1880 as a real estate office and opened as a barbershop in 1898 by George Hopper.
Hopper operated the business on South Main Street/Route 9 in Barnegat, according to the historical society.
Now, it serves as part of the Barnegat Historical Society's Heritage Village and Museum. Guests can walk around and imagine what it was like to get a shave and a haircut in the past while being surrounded by historical artifacts.
