Asleep Driver Hits Pole, Sparks Another Round Of Outages In Barnegat

Some of Barnegat woke up to no power - again - on Sunday after a driver fell asleep at the wheel and struck a utility pole, police said.

BARNEGAT, NJ — Some residents of Barnegat woke up to no power yet again on Sunday after an asleep driver stuck a utility pole, police said.

The unnamed 23-year-old fell asleep at the wheel while driving east on West Bay Avenue, Barnegat police said.

Her car ran off the roadway and struck a pole, causing it to snap in half, which in turn caused power outages for about 1,000 homes in town, police said.

The driver, a Barnegat resident, was treated on scene but refused further medical treatment, according to police.

Atlantic City Electric worked to restore power to the area while police detoured traffic to Old Brookville Road.

Outages earlier in the week were caused by the weather and a substation part failure, officials previously said.
