Barnegat Bicylist Fatally Hit By Car On Delaware College Campus

The 18-year-old was riding his bike on the University of Delaware campus when he was hit by a van at an intersection, police said.

NEWARK, DE — A Barnegat man died early Friday morning when he was struck by a van while riding his bicycle on the University of Delaware campus, authorities said.

According to police in Newark, Delaware, the crash happened around 2:50 p.m. when a 2013 Toyota Sienna traveling east on West Delaware Avenue struck 18-year-old Daniel Bacsik. Police said Bacsik was biking north on South College Avenue and was approaching the intersection with West Delaware Avenue when he was struck.

Bacsik was thrown from his bike during the collision. He died at the scene, authorities said.

The 24-year-old driver of the Toyota remained at the scene, police said. According to authorities, neither speed nor impairment played a role in the crash.

Police also said the traffic light at the intersection was functioning correctly and displayed a green light for eastbound traffic on West Delaware Avenue and a red light for traffic on South College Avenue.
