Barnegat Duo To Dance For 46 Hours In Childhood Cancer Fundraiser

BARNEGAT, NJ — A pair of friends from Barnegat will be dancing for 46 hours straight after raising thousands to help fight childhood cancer.

Caroline Sullivan, 21, and Kira Smith, 20, two longtime friends who attend Penn State University, were overjoyed to find out they were selected to participate in this year's THON, an entirely student-run event where a year-long fundraiser to battle childhood cancer culminates in a 46-hour danceathon.

The pair raised $7,555 in order to be eligible for the dancer lottery, and they recently found out that they were selected.

"We are so excited for this opportunity and can't wait to stand together for 46 hours," Sullivan and Smith shared with Patch.

THON got its start in 1977 and since has raised more than $204 million for Four Diamonds at Penn State Health Children's Hospital, helping families diagnosed with childhood cancer.

THON weekend takes place between Feb. 16 and 18. You can watch a livestream at THON.org. The THON 2024 total will be revealed at 4 p.m. on Feb. 18.
