Up and moving.
That's how Helen Behrens describes the atmosphere in the Barnegat school district's high school, middle school and five elementary schools today, as administrators scramble for the first day of school on Thursday.
Total enrollment as of Aug. 21 stood at 3,180 students, which Behrens - administrative assistant to Superintendent Karen Wood - says is "pretty steady."
The Barnegat district consists of a high school, middle school and four elementary schools.
Opening times are staggered for the four elementary schools. The Cecil S. Collins School and the Lillian M. Dunfee School open at 8:50 a.m. The Robert J. Horbelt School and the Joseph T. Donahue School open at 8:20 a.m.
Barnegat High School opens at 7:10 a.m. The Brackman Middle School opens at 7:40 a.m. All schools in the district have an early dismissal at 11:50 a.m. both Thursday and Friday, Behrens said.
