Barnegat's Jason Groome And Boston Red Sox Agree On $3.65 Million Signing Bonus

Groome is already in Boston, pending the results of a physical.

Barnegat High School's Jason Groome and the Boston Red Sox reportedly have inked a signing bonus deal that will pay the 17-year-old lefthander $3.65 million.

Multiple news outlets are reporting that the agreement came late on Thursday, just before today's deadline for major league teams to sign their drafted players, according to app.com.

The Red Sox reportedly offered a $3.5 million bonus earlier this week that Groome and his agent Jeff Randazzo weren't happy with. The Red Sox apparently upped the offer to s3.65 million later in the week.

Groome's slot value was $3.128 million. The Red Sox signed six of their top ten pics to bonuses below slot value, but still had enough money in their signing bonus pool, the report says.

Groome, a 17-year-old lefthander from Barnegat, was considered by many to be the most talented pitcher available in last month's MLB First-Year Player Draft.

If the two sides hadn't come to an agreement, Groome would have attended Chipola College, a Florida junior college and would have been eligible to reenter the draft next year. The Red Sox in turn would have gotten a compensatory pick in the 2017 draft.
